Reduce Scarring with Scar Surgery Treatments
Scar surgery
Scar surgery is used to reduce the appearance of scars on any part of the body for blending it with the surrounding skin tone and texture.
Scars can belong to any of the following categories:
- Surface Irregularities: These are the subtle scars on the skin which impart a raised or depressed texture to the affected area. Acne scars, or scars resulting from an injury, mostly fall under this category.
- Hypertrophic Scars: These are the thick scar tissues clustered at the wound site which become deleterious with time. Pigmentation might occur in the affected area. A surgeon may choose to surgically get rid of a large hypertrophic scar than review it. Scar removal helps a surgeon reclose the slit using specific cosmetic techniques, resulting in a thinner and a less noticeable scar.
- Keloids: These are the fibrous tissues formed post healing of the injured skin and are mostly raised above the surface. They might be the outcome of a burn, cut or severe acne lesions. While a surgical incision is curing, stitches could modify the appearance of a scar. If the stitches are not removed before the top film of the skin rebuilds around them, the access points of the stitches might become everlasting features, resulting in scars. In case scars cover large parts of the skin e.g.: a burn scar, a surgeon might choose to perform a reconstructive procedure, such as skin enlargement, to change the burnt scar with normal skin.
- Contractures: They restrict movement due to the skin and underlying tissue that pulls together during the healing process. Contractures occur when there is a large amount of tissue loss, such as after a burn. They may also be the result of a muscle or tendon that has remained too tight for a long time.
Depending on the category and severity of the scar, Dr Satya Saraswat might perform any of the below-mentioned treatments. The duration of the surgery and the number of seating varies from patient to patient.
- Topical treatments: This is suggested in mild surface scars and pigmentation when the affected skin can be brought to normal using certain creams and lotions over time. An allergy or patch test is advised before starting any topical application.
- Botox and Dermal Fillers: Dermal fillers and Botox are injected in depressed or concave scars to add fullness to the area, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Depending upon the filler component used and the severity of the case, the fillers may last from three months to several years and regular maintenance might be required. They are far less invasive and do not involve surgery.
Botox comprises of purified bacteria which freezes the muscles. In doing so, Botox can assist in substantially reducing the fine wrinkles and lines produced by facial expressions.
Dermal fillers are rich in ingredients that add fullness and firmness to areas that have thinned out due to the effects of ageing. This thinning is mostly found in the cheeks, lips, and around the mouth.
- Dermabrasion: It is a resurfacing or polishing treatment to replenish the skin’s outer layer. Dermabrasion is most often used to enhance the look of the facial skin left scarred due to accidents or previous surgeries. It might also be used to even out fine facial wrinkles, lines, deep acne scars, and eradicate the pre-cancerous progressions known as keratoses. Mild anaesthesia or a topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure.
- Laser treatment: The laser releases a penetrating beam of energy that vaporizes and heats tissues instantly. The treatment is performed so precisely that the surrounding tissues are not affected. As soon as the outer layer of the skin has been detached, the new skin that nurtures beneath is smoother, softer, and has a more youthful presence. They are used for deep old scars, usually difficult to remove by other procedures. Depending upon the type of laser used, there might be a minimum downtime associated post the treatment.
- Chemical Peels: These are chemicals that penetrate the skin’s surface to exfoliate the skin and eventually peel it off. The new skin is usually smoother and radiant. They are normally done on the face, neck and hands. You might see redness for twenty minutes to half an hour post the peeling, and also experience flaking or dryness over the passage of a few days, but otherwise, you can resume business immediately. The most common acids used in superficial peels are glycolic, salicylic, kojic acid, and malic acid. For people who regularly get peels done, the strength of each peel can be increased each time. Consequently, the person’s tolerance rises, and over time, patients are capable to receive tougher peels with reduced downtime.
